James Cleverton

James was born in Kent and studied at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama in Glasgow, graduating in 2000. His awards include the prestigious Texaco Award for Advanced Opera. Between 2003 and 2005 he was a member of Zürich Opera’s International Opera Studio. He is a 2008 Susan Chilcott Scholar. James Cleverton has sung Escamillo Carmen for the Spier Opera Festival in South Africa, The Pirate King The Pirates Of Penzance with the D’Oyly Carte Opera Company at the Savoy Theatre, Count Asdrubale La Pietra Del Paragone for Opera de Rennes and Stanley Hall Opera, Silvio Pagliacci for English Touring Opera and the Concordia Foundation in Hanoi, title roles Eugene Onegin and Don Giovanni for Opera by Definition, Enrico Lucia Di Lammermoor for Iford Festival, Dr Malatesta Don Pasquale for Stanley Hall Opera, Grosvenor Patience, Giuseppe The Gondoliers and Captain Corcoran HMS Pinafore at the Buxton Gilbert and Sullivan Festival.

On the concert platform, James has performed oratorios with some of Europe’s most prominent orchestras. Most recently he sang a Mozart concert with the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment in the Zürich Tonhalle, Mahler’s Lieder Eines Fahrenden Gesellen with the Ensemble Classique, Carmina Burana, Stanford Songs Of The Fleet, Vaughan Williams 5 Mystical Songs and toured the British Isles in A Viennese Strauss Gala with the European Orchestral Ensemble, Christ in the Matthew Passion with the Plymouth Philharmonic Society, and Brahms’ REQUIEM.

Recent engagements include concerts with the English Mozart Ensemble, covering the role of Punch Punch And Judy for English National Opera at the Young Vic, the Casino Director The Gambler and Sprecher Die Zauberflöte with the English Chamber Orchestra at Grange Park Opera, Schaunard La Bohème for Mid-Wales Opera, Pish Tush The Mikado at Buxton Festival and Captain Corcoran Hms Pinafore for Zurich Pocket Opera. Engagements in 2008 include Larkens Fanciulla Del West for Grange Park Opera, Ford Falstaff for Nevill Holt Festival and tour, Escamillo Carmen in Taunton, Giuseppe The Gondoliers and the Council Trial By Jury at the Buxton Festival and the title role of Sweeney Todd for Pimlico Opera.
